Thomasville, North Carolina was incorporated on January 8, 1857. When the town's founder, John W. Thomas, first arrived on the site that would become Thomasville, the only thing there was a burned hog pen, but it didn't stay that way for long. Soon, there was a railroad, a women's seminary, merchants, and taverns. Thomasville has a long history as a hub for furniture manufacturing. Early settlers there made split-bottom chairs by hand. Later, the city would be the birthplace of Thomasville Furniture Industries, a furniture company first established in 1905, which is still in business today. Commemorating Thomasville's history is "The Big Chair," a 30-foot Duncan Phyfe replica that stands in the middle of the city. Today's Thomasville, North Carolina is a fast-growing, All-America City award-winning community in the Piedmont region. It's a diverse and vibrant city, conveniently located approximately half an hour from Greensboro, Lexington, and Winston-Salem. Popular nearby attractions include the Thomasville Emporium Antique Mall, the Baptist Children's Home, and the Thomasville Visitors Center, which offers visitors a glimpse into the history of the North Carolina railroad system.
